Mathematics National 4

What is special about this course?

Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives.

This course would be most suited to students who do not have a Level 4 qualification in Mathematics and are looking to study Mathematics to Level 5 or beyond.  This would be the best first step on that path. 

The course will help you to develop mathematical skills relevant to learning, life and work in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Entry requirements

Suitable for those who do not hold a prior Mathematics qualification but have good numerical skills.

To be eligible for multiply funding you should be aged 17 years or over at the start date of the course, not in full time education, and resident within Argyll and Bute local authority area. 

If you do not meet these criteria, or are not eligible for a fee waiver, a course fee of £344 will apply.

Mathematics: Numeracy

  • The general aim of this Unit is to develop your numerical and information handling skills. You will use numerical skills to solve straightforward, real-life problems involving number, money, time and measurement, and interpret graphical data. 

Mathematics: Expressions and Formulae

  • You will develop skills linked to mathematical expressions and formulae.

Mathematics: Relationships

  • You will develop skills linked to mathematical relationships. The outcomes cover aspects of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and reasoning.

It is important that you devote regular time to revision and independent study outwith class, as it is not possible to achieve success only by attending the weekly classes and tutorial.

  • Evening

Classes will be networked across Argyll by lecturers using Video Conferencing equipment. You will attend your nearest UHI Argyll college centre.

This course is funded with UK Government Levelling Up Multiply funding.

What can I do on completion of my course?

Successful candidates will be able to progress to a range of qualifications including National 5 Mathematics  or Applications of Maths at SCQF Level 5.
