Beauty Care and Make-Up Level 5 NC

What is special about this course?

Do you dream of a career in the beauty industry?  

The NC Beauty Level 5 course will teach you all the basics and give you the hands-on experience required to kickstart your career. You will learn how to practice essential beauty treatments, such as makeup application, facial skincare, nail care, lash treatments, waxing and massage, whilst also gaining an understanding of the science behind the practices.  

You'll spend most of your time in our college salon working with real clients, and learning from experienced lecturers, who have industry expertise as makeup artists and salon owners. You'll have the opportunity to visit local businesses to observe the daily operations of salons and spas first-hand, and gain valuable insight into the professional world.  

There will be plenty of time to practice treatments during class and we'll even provide you with your own beauty kit to take home to practice your new skills.  

Entry requirements

You must be 16 years of age at the start of the course. Any relevant previous experience would be beneficial.

Much of your time will be spent in the college salon, practicing:  

• How to carry out essential beauty treatments  
• Application techniques, including the use of different tools and products
• Client care and consultations, practicing with your fellow classmates and real clients  
• How to work in a safe salon environment

In the classroom you will:

• Learn the science behind different beauty treatments
• Develop a portfolio to present your practical work  
• Develop product knowledge  

You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:

• Improve your ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues
• Work collaboratively with classmates to build strong relationships and support each other
• Develop skills in time management and organisation 

The units you will study include:

• Beauty and Make-up: Portfolio Presentation - research the various types of portfolios available and the required techniques to be able to present visuals of practical work in well organised manner and to a high standard
• Day Make-up and Basic Corrective Make-up – a complete introduction to the appropriate cosmetics for each client's skin type, application techniques including the use of tools and products, consultation techniques, skin types, skin tone and corrective make-up techniques
• Facial Skin Care – development of practical facial skin care techniques including exfoliation and massage. Theoretical knowledge including skin structure, health and safety requirements and consultation techniques
• Bridal and Evening Make-up – a practical based unit which will allow students to develop their application techniques in both evening and bridal make-up styles
• Manicure – practical development of nail care skills and a theoretical knowledge of the nail, bone, and skin structure
• Pedicure – development of practical skills including shaping the nail, cuticle care, basic foot care and nail finishing techniques, consultation techniques and the relevant theoretical knowledge
• Waxing Treatments – the development of basic practical skills in body hair removal and the required knowledge of skin and hair structure
• Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage – an introduction to the massage techniques used for body massage, including the relevant theoretical knowledge; effects and benefits of each technique
• Applying Practical Skills – progression of the student's practical skills and abilities       
• Selling Skills – a theory and role play based unit aiding in the development of selling skills within the salon setting               
• Skills for Customer Care – a theory-based unit ensuring a full understanding of customer care skills, methods of collecting customer feedback and how to use this feedback effectively

Equipment

The college will provide tunics and all required products and equipment. 

Fees

Most full-time students will automatically have their course fees paid for this course.   

If you have recently moved to, or do not normally live in Scotland, you may need to pay £5,970 in course fees, these can be paid in instalments. Families of Armed Services personnel are subject to different fees regulations and may also have to pay course fees. If you think this may apply to you, please contact us and we can advise you. 

This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU). 

Part-time FE students who are on low incomes or in receipt of certain benefits may also have their course fees paid for them. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible.  

Each single SQA unit costs £90. You may be able to apply for an Individual Training Account (ITA) to cover up to £200 of part time fees. 

Funding

Bursary for Living Costs 

If you are 18 years of age or over on the start date of your course, and will be studying full-time you may be eligible for bursary funding, depending on your household income. Our bursary fund is finite and is allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so it’s important to make your application for bursary as soon as the application process opens in July. You will need to have accepted our offer before you apply. 

If you are under 18 you may be eligible for EMA. EMA is paid at a rate of £30 per week dependent on your total household income.
