Are you passionate about hairdressing and eager to start your career in the beauty industry?
The NC Hairdressing Level 5 course is designed to give you a solid foundation in hairdressing skills. You'll learn practical techniques like styling, cutting and colouring, whilst also developing important customer care and business skills by working with real clients in the college salon in Dunoon.
The course is an ideal starting point for anyone who wants to build confidence, creativity, and develop their skills at the beginning of their hairdressing journey.
Entry requirements
You must be 16 years of age at the start of the course.
Much of your time will be spent in the college salon learning practical skills such as:
- Cutting and styling client's hair
- Shampooing and blow dries
- General salon duties, including reception duties, client consultations, maintaining and preparing products and supplies
In the classroom environment you will learn:
- The theory behind colouring
- How to build your own portfolio of work
- Essential ICT skills for business, including using spreadsheets and designing leaflets
You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:
- Gain effective communication skills when working with clients
- Build your confidence and resilience
- Develop teamwork skills by working on a group project
The units you will study include:
- Shampooing, Conditioning and Scalp Massage will introduce you to hair and skin and teach you how to choose and use products while incorporating appropriate massage techniques.
- Blow Drying Techniques where you will gain the skills and techniques on how to choose appropriate styles for clients through consultation.
- Setting and Winding Techniques for Hair will teach you the basics and what tools to use before moving on to basic cuts for ladies hairdressing where you will develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to do a range of basic haircuts.
- Mix, apply and remove colour
- Reception duties and customer care will give you an experience of the front facing skills required within the industry.
- Portfolio presentation gives you the chance to plan and build a portfolio of completed practical work and learn how to present it in a relevant style.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This practical course will mainly be taught in-person at our college salon. You will spend time in the classroom environment learning the theory side of Hairdressing.
You will attend class for approximately 3 days per week.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Most students who complete this course go on to further study with the NC Hairdressing Level 6 course.
Some of our students have gone on to find work in local salons, with their employers valuing the work ethic, timekeeping skills and industry knowledge the course helps to develop.
