What is special about this course?

The NC Hairdressing Level 6 course is designed to equip you with advanced hairdressing techniques and knowledge, preparing you for employment for junior stylist roles.

You'll gain hands-on experience in our college salon in Dunoon with more advanced cutting, colouring, and styling techniques, whilst also staying up to date with the latest trends. You'll undertake client consultations with less supervision and can work on the salon floor independently while having the opportunity to enhance your skills.  

Entry requirements

You must be 16 or over at the start date of the course and have:

  • NC Hairdressing Level 5, or  
  • SVQ 2 Hairdressing

Relevant work experience may be considered. Applicants may need to complete a skills test.

Much of your time will be spent in the college salon learning practical skills such as:

  • Advanced cutting techniques, including more complex haircuts, restyles and cuts of 3 inches or more
  • Gaining expertise and confidence in applying hair colour and understanding colour theory  
  • Developing skills in personalising haircuts and styles to suit clients' lifestyles

In the classroom environment you will:  

  • Produce style books to keep up to date with current trends
  • Carry out reflective practice on each client 
  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills when working as a group on the end of year photoshoot

You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:

  • Improve your ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues
  • Build confidence through working with less supervision
  • Prepare for employment  

The units you will study include:

  • Combination Haircutting this will give you chance to develop your cutting skill while learning a variety of techniques, you will develop your skills in dyeing and using finishing products.  You will consult with your clients and evaluate the finished products.  
  • Hair colouring, lightening and correction you will look at consultation with your client, choosing the products and applying and removing colours in line with current trends. 
  • Styling for a total look and creative long hair looks this will develop your skills in styling and create a range of finishes. You will plan using a story board to develop your finished look.  
  • Artistic design in hair colouring, cutting and styling you can develop your artistic side, reflecting current and emerging trends in the Hairdressing business, you will learn how to create individual and innovative approaching to colouring, styling and cutting.  
  • Commercial experience you will spend time in the college salon gaining a realistic experience of services on clients.

Equipment

All equipment and PPE will be provided.

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

This practical course will mainly be taught in-person at our college salon. You will spend time in the classroom environment learning the theory side of Hairdressing. 

You will attend class for approximately 3 days per week.

What can I do on completion of my course?

After completing this course many of our students go on to achieve junior stylist roles in salons, building their experience of styling, cutting, colouring and working with clients. Some students choose to become self-employed and start their own hairdressing business.
