Entry requirements

  • Level 5 Access to Care (health and early years) 

OR

  • 4 National 5s or equivalent

If you don't meet our entry requirements, your previous experience may still qualify you for this course. Mature students will be considered on merit. Please get in touch with us to discuss how suitable this course is for you. 

The practical elements of the course include:    

  • Taking part in activities to learn about the various aspects of healthcare  
  • Learning skills and strategies to support different care requirements 
  • Guest lecturers from a range of different care backgrounds
  • Learning essential basic first aid

In the classroom environment you will:

  • Consider current challenges facing the healthcare sector 
  • Learn essential IT skills and how to use industry recognised resources
  • Learn basic numeracy skills which you can apply within the healthcare environment 

You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:

  • Increase your confidence and self-belief
  • Improve your ability to communicate effectively 
  • Work collaboratively with your peers to enhance social and teamwork skills 

The units you will study include: 

  • Human Body - An introduction to the structure and function of the human body, the links between them and how disease can change function.
  • Prevention of Infection - The unit develops knowledge and understanding of the causes of infection, the way infection enters the body, the spread of infection, and the ways in which the body fights infection.
  • Mental Health Issues: An Introduction - This Unit enables learners to be aware of the history of mental health services and attitudes towards people with mental disorder.
  • Caring for People with Dementia - This Unit will develop knowledge and understanding of Dementia and the effects it has on the individual and their Carers. It will also enable candidates to develop awareness of the skills and strategies necessary for the support and care of people with Dementia and their Carers.
  • Stress & Stress Management - This Unit enables learners to identify causes and symptoms of stress. It will also enable them to investigate ways of managing stress once it has been identified in an individual.
  • Human Development -This unit will allow learners to apply knowledge of human development and behaviour to individuals using care services based on psychological theories.
  • Social Influences - This unit will allow learners to analyse how social influences affect individuals using care services based on sociological theories.
  • Health Promotion - This Unit enables learners to examine the basis for health promotion and to understand some of the factors that influence health promotion activity.
  • Communication in Care Relationships - An introduction to the importance of communication in Social Services settings including focus on the needs, wishes and preferences of individuals and potential barriers to communication.
  • Care: Values & Principles - This unit will investigate how care services meet the needs of individuals.
  • Safeguarding People - This unit is to introduce the importance of safeguarding people from risk, harm, and exploitative behaviour. The unit also introduces rights and responsibilities associated with safeguarding.
  • Intro to Basic First Aid - An introduction to first aid covering assessing minor injuries and minor medical conditions, how to deal with them, demonstrating how to get help.
  • Skills + Portfolio - Embedded into many of our FE courses are 'meta-skills'. We support you to develop your meta-skills, which are described as “skills for the future” – skills that we all need to help us adapt to the changing world around us. 

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

Your course will generally be a mix of local centre-based learning time, and flexible learning time. You need to commit to both, but you can choose when to complete flexible learning to fit around work, caring and personal commitments.
