Engineering Operations (PEO) Level 5 SVQ
What is special about this course?
If you enjoy solving problems and want a practical, hands-on career, engineering could be the path for you.
The SCQF Level 5 Engineering Operations course is highly practical and designed to prepare you for employment or a Modern Apprenticeship in engineering.
Delivered at the college's Construction, Engineering and Renewables Centre (CERC) in Lochgilphead, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the various aspects of engineering, including maintaining mechanical and electrical devices and equipment, welding, pipework systems and more.
You may also have the opportunity to gain an engineering-related work placement during the course.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be 16 or over at the start date of the course. Previous completion of the Skills for Work Engineering Skills or our Access to Engineering courses would be beneficial but not essential.
Much of your time will be spent in the workshop, learning practical skills such as:
- Mechanical maintenance, learning to strip devices down, understand their workings, and reassemble them
- How to use CAD software
- Familiarising yourself with various engineering equipment and tools you will use to carry out tasks
- Working safely in the workshop environment
In the classroom you will learn:
- How to apply engineering theory to solve practical problems
- To improve your reasoning skills through classroom discussions
- How to effectively break down complex tasks into manageable steps to organise project work
You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:
- Gain effective communication skills like giving orders and being part of a team
- Build confidence and resilience
- Learn how to evaluate and improve your own work
The units you will study include:
- Preparing and Using Manual TIG or Plasma-arc Welding Equipment
- Producing Components Using Hand Fitting Techniques
- Producing Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies
- Maintaining Mechanical Devices and Equipment
- Maintaining Electrical Equipment/Systems
- Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
- Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
- Using and Communicating Technical Information
Equipment
All Personal Protective Equipment will be supplied by the college.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
Practical delivery takes place in the engineering workshop and classroom at the college's Construction, Engineering and Renewables Centre in Lochgilphead.
You will be expected to attend classes for 3 days per week.

Fees
Scottish resident full-time students will automatically have their course fees paid for this course.
If you have recently moved to, or do not normally live in Scotland, you may need to pay £5,970 in course fees, these can be paid in instalments. Families of Armed Services personnel are subject to different fees regulations and may also have to pay course fees. If you think this may apply to you, please contact us and we can advise you.
This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU).
Part-time FE students who are on low incomes or in receipt of certain benefits may also have their course fees paid for them. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible.
What can I do on completion of my course?
This course will open doors to many engineering Modern Apprenticeships and further study options in a wide range of engineering disciplines.
Most of our students secure engineering related jobs before finishing the course. Past students have gone on to work in renewables, manufacturing plants, local garages, and into the agricultural and marine sectors.
