What can you study?

These courses are FREE for residents of Arran, fully funded through the UK Government Levelling Up Fund in partnership with North Ayrshire Council.

Employability Skills: An Introduction

Do you want to improve your employability skills and develop some essential knowledge and qualifications? This course is perfect for adults thinking about returning to employment, wanting to develop confidence, or school leavers unsure of next steps.

The course may cover topics such as:

  • Communication
  • Preparing for Employment: First Steps
  • Building your Own Employability Skills

An experienced lecturer will deliver sessions online at our welcoming, local Arran centre and you will get support from centre staff. We’ve designed our sessions to be helpful, practical and easy to access.  A small amount of self-directed study out with class time is also expected.

This course takes place one day per week for 17 weeks starting late August. There will be a 1-week break in October in line with UHI Argyll term times.

IT Skills for Business

Do you want to develop your knowledge and skills in a range of popular and commonly used IT software programmes?

This is a National Progression Award (NPA) which is a qualification recognised by employers. It is suited jobseekers trying to upskill or employees who want to improve their existing software skills. The qualification will enable you to develop a range of basic IT skills directly relevant to the world of business and employment.

This course runs over the full academic year (late August to end May) and is made up of three SQA units which each require 2 hours class time plus self study:

  • Word Processing (Starts August)
  • Spreadsheets (Starts January)
  • Presentations (Starts January)

Single unit study is also available.

There will be breaks in October, Christmas and April in line with UHI Argyll term times.

Do you want to improve your business skills and get a recognised qualification?

This course is perfect jobseekers or anyone looking to develop their confidence and business knowledge. This course is also a good follow on from the Employability Skills course in Semester One.

The course may cover topics such as:

  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Establishing a Business Identity
  • Cyber Security Fundamentals
  • Internet Safety

An experienced lecturer will deliver sessions online at our welcoming, local Arran centre and get support from centre staff. We’ve designed our sessions to be helpful, practical and easy to access. A small amount of self-directed study out with class time is also expected

This course takes place one day per week for 17 weeks and will start at the end of January 2025. There will be a 2-week break in April in line with UHI Argyll term times.

Positive about numbers

Do you want to be able to help your children with their schoolwork and improve your own numeracy?

Positive about Numbers will give you a solid grounding in numeracy and a Level 4 or 5 Mathematics qualification.

An experienced lecturer will deliver sessions either online or join in at one of our welcoming, local centres and get support from centre staff. We’ve designed our sessions to be helpful, practical, and fun. Classes are two and a half hours a week for 12 weeks.

Positive about money

Do you want to develop new numeracy skills for everyday life, like budgeting and managing money?

Positive about money will help you:

  • understand the costs involved with borrowing money;
  • consider long-term financial planning; and
  • look at different ways of buying goods and compare different deals.

An experienced lecturer will deliver our practical and fun sessions either online or join in at one of our welcoming, local centres, and get support from our centre staff. Classes are two and a half hours a week for 12 weeks.

Maths Nat 4

Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives.

This course would be most suited to students who do not have a Level 4 qualification in Mathematics and are looking to study Mathematics to Level 5 or beyond. This would be the best first step on that path.

The course will help you to develop mathematical skills relevant to learning, life and work in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Application of Maths Nat 5

The National 5 Applications of Mathematics course explores the applications of mathematical techniques and skills in everyday situations, including financial matters, statistics, and measurement. The skills, knowledge and understanding in the course also support learning in other curriculum areas, such as technology, health and wellbeing, science, and social studies.4

Work-based training

The Multiply Programme is also funding some work-based training, including:

  • Elementary Food Hygiene
  • Intermediate Food Hygiene
  • Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders
