Free renewable heating systems training
Is your business struggling to meet the demand for renewable heating technology?
Do you see the move to carbon neutrality and the desire to cut household bills as a business opportunity, especially in rural areas?
UHI Argyll has secured funding to provide free training, in partnership with West College Scotland. Training is aimed at experienced plumbers or heating engineers within Argyll and Bute and Arran who want to broaden their skill set. This project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund.
Why is this needed?
It’s important that residents in remote, rural areas can enjoy all the benefits of renewable heating technology, saving money and protecting the environment. We want to support local technicians to develop the skills and capacity needed to service, repair and maintain these systems.
When and where will these courses be held?
The renewables courses will be delivered by our partner West College Scotland, at its campus in Paisley.
The training on offer
This course is designed to provide a background to renewable energy heating and energy technologies for anyone who may find it of interest.
- BPEC Solar Thermal Systems - Wednesday 18 – Friday 20 May.
This is a nationally recognised qualification in the installation and maintenance of small thermal hot water systems.
- BPEC Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps – Monday 30 May – Thursday 2 June
This course is designed to provide you with the skills to design, install and commission ground source, and air source heat pumps.
Costs
These courses are fully funded, and we will reimburse travel expenses to West College Scotland, subsistence, and cover for loss of earnings. Full information on how to claim will be provided to successful applicants.

How we assess the applications
- Priority will be given to businesses in remote/rural locations that can demonstrate the sustainability of their business, and where there is evidence of customer demand for green technologies.
- Places on each course are limited to 1 per business, and we may ask for supporting evidence where this scheme is oversubscribed.
- Candidates should hold certification in Water Byelaws (Scotland) or Water Regulations (England and Wales) and provide proof of Unvented Hot Water certificate for both Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal Systems training.
- Please note that we may be able to assist you with alternative funding if you are not awarded a place
The UK Community Renewal Fund is a UK Government programme for 2021/22.
