UHI Argyll apprentices shine at Knorr Student Chef of the Year Scottish Finals

On Wednesday 26 March 2025, Lewis MacLeod and Evie Edgington, apprentices from UHI Argyll, showcased their culinary prowess at the Knorr Student Chef of the Year Scottish Finals, held at the City of Glasgow College. Competing against Scotland's top catering colleges, Lewis and Evie secured an impressive third place, demonstrating their exceptional skills and teamwork.

The day was filled with excitement and hard work as Head Chef Lewis MacLeod and Assistant Chef Evie Edgington created two stunning dishes that captivated the judges. Lewis's leadership and passion for food were evident throughout the competition, and Evie earned a commendation from the judges for her precision and technique whilst expertly filleting the large halibut Lewis had brought down from Oban.

The judges were thoroughly impressed by both Lewis and Evie, noting that they had even picked up new tips and tricks from observing the pair in action. As the only work-based learners in the competition, Lewis and Evie brought valuable industry knowledge and experience to the kitchen, resulting in effective teamwork, remarkable dishes, and an impeccably maintained workstation.

The Knorr Student Chef of the Year competition, now in its second year, aims to discover and celebrate the next generation of young Scottish chefs. With a focus on nurturing creativity and innovation, the competition inspires students to reach their full potential and highlights the vibrant future of Scotland's culinary industry.

The finalists competed in teams of two to complete a skills test and deliver a two-course meal based on the theme of wellbeing. The judges, led by competition ambassador Gary Maclean, executive chef at Unilever Food Solutions James Brown, and Bidfood Scotland’s food development chef Martin Ross, looked for menus that showcased the connection between nutrition and health, using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

Lewis and Evie's outstanding performance at the Knorr Student Chef of the Year Scottish Finals is a testament to their dedication and talent. On behalf of everyone at UHI Argyll, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on their remarkable achievement!
